Focolare Movement – I might have a vocation

Joan Duggan was co-founder of a very successful company, which she later sold. She then worked in the corporate world for a while, but eventually gave almost all of her money away and founded an EoC-minded tutoring startup in upstate New York, which she helped manage for over 2 decades. Joan describes how she came to decide to give a great deal of money from her previous business ventures to the Focolare movement. This also led her to realize that she had a vocation to be an entrepreneur and to follow God in a particular way.

  1. Joan gave a great deal of her own wealth to the Focolare movement because she felt a call from God to do so. Do you think this is crazy? Or might God actually ask us to give at times in a very particular way?
  2. Joan found that when she followed the call she felt she was getting, she actually learned a lot more about herself (her vocation, her call to be an entrepreneur, etc). How often do you think that we/people do not realize what we are supposed to actually do because we do not respond to promptings which come to our minds??
  3. What does this story show about using wealth for social or community good?
  4. What motivated the Joan to re-engage with business after promising not to?
