Competitors

Joan Dugan was co-founder of a very successful company, which she later sold. She then worked in the corporate world for a while, but eventually gave almost all of her money away and founded an EoC-minded tutoring startup in upstate New York, which she helped manage for over 2 decades.

In this clip, Joan discusses the different view of competitors from an Economy of Communion perspective. She talks about the shock from her "competitors" when she approached them with a mindset of working together to help other instead of one of competition.

  1. What are some practices that can be used in business to view competition as allies and collaborate with them instead of working against them?
  2. Where might this mindset of working together to help others be seen in the business world today?
  3. What are some competitive practices taken by large companies to discredit their competition? How might these companies look different if they worked together with a primary goal of helping the consumer, instead of working separately to discredit competitors?
