How did the EoC start

John Mundell is the founder, president, and Senior Environmental Consultant at Mundel & Associates, a leading environmental firm based in Indianapolis, which has addressed environmental cleanup projects worldwide.

Here John explains the origins of the Economy of Communion as an innovative response inspired by Chiara Lubich's experience in Brazil and the teachings of Pope John Paul II's Centesimus Annus. Seeing the struggles of the Focolare community's poor members, Chiara proposed using business as a tool to address poverty and create social change. The movement quickly expanded because people recognized its potential as a global vision for transforming the role of business.

  1. Why was the idea of using business as a tool for addressing poverty considered revolutionary when the EOC began?
  2. How did Chiara Lubich's experience in Brazil influence the development of the Economy of Communion?
  3. What does the growth of the EOC suggest about the potential role of business in creating social change?
