Giving Employment

Paul Catipon, EoC entrepreneur, is the founder, president, and CTO of Netpro Communications in New York City.

This clip reflects on how unexpected talents can strengthen a business when people are given a chance. As an independent contractor, he hired individuals whose backgrounds didn’t seem to match his technical company at first. However, their unique skills, from data organization to professional writing, quickly proved invaluable. Through this experience, he highlights a key principle of the EoC: everyone has something to offer, and meaningful work can emerge when we recognize both people’s needs and their gifts.

  1. EoC is about an economy of giving and receiving (reciprocity). How did Paul give to these employees he hired, and how did they give to him?
  2. How does this story challenge the idea that only “perfectly qualified” candidates should be hired for specific roles?
  3. In what ways can diverse skill sets add value to technical fields?
  4. What does Paul Catipon’s example teach us about the balance between meeting business needs and supporting others’ personal needs?
