Relational Not Transactional

Karen Joy Dizon is marketing director at Focolare Media, the U.S. publishing and communications arm of the Focolare Movement — home to New City Press and Living City magazine — where she leads marketing for books, periodicals, and digital content on dialogue, unity, and faith in daily life. She is also founder of Salamat Designs LLC, an EoC business.

This video discusses relational versus transactional business and how the EoC approaches this.

  1. How are EOC businesses more relational, and not just transactional?
  2. How does the relational focus of EOC business help Karen to see competitors as people to help?
  3. Karen says that she thinks people are eager to learn a new way of doing business which is more relational and not just transactional. Do you think that is right? Or do people sometimes just prefer to have a transaction and move on?
  4. Can you think of business experiences you have had which were transactional in an annoying way? Alternatively, can you think of business interactions you have had where the relationality made the whole event more enjoyable and life giving?
  5. In your own engagements with others in the workplace, how can you help make those interactions more relational, and not so transactional?
