Importance of Employee Engagement

Emery Koenig spent 38 years at Cargill, one of the world's largest privately held agricultural companies, rising from commodity trader to Vice Chairman and Chief Risk Officer. A longtime member of the Focolare movement, Emery integrated his faith and values into every level of his work—from trading posts across the U.S. to senior leadership decisions affecting 160,000 employees worldwide.

In this clip, Emery describes Cargill's employee engagement surveys—run every 12 to 24 months—and what they revealed about the quality of leadership. He explains that "world class" engagement is 75%, and that he held his teams to an upward trend requirement regardless of starting point. He describes being genuinely bothered even at that threshold, asking where the other 25% were. His approach to disengaged employees was not termination but genuine help finding a better fit: "life is too short" to spend years somewhere you're not fulfilled. And he argues the effect ripples outward—you cannot expect engaged customers if your own people aren't engaged.
