Firing Employee

Joan Duggan was co-founder of a very successful company, which she later sold. She then worked in the corporate world for a while, but eventually gave almost all of her money away and founded an EoC-minded tutoring startup in upstate New York, which she helped manage for over 2 decades.

In this clip, Joan Duggan discusses how a board of directors set out to fire their credit manager for something he didn't know that he was supposed to do. Joan, taking a people-first approach to the situation, communicated with the employee instead of going forward with the board's decision, thus saving his job.

  1. How should a business balance prioritize for-profit decisions against those with treating employees fairly?
  2. Are companies responsible for developing and delegating work to their employees? Or should that fall on the responsibility of the employees themselves?
  3. In an EoC approach to business, how would an employee who doesn't know what they're doing wrong be treated or approached compared to a typical business?
