Extractive Capitalism

Liz Wallin, a former EoC entrepreneur, founded project LIA, which helped provide work training for formerly incarcerated women in Indianapolis. In this clip, Liz Wallin talks about the phrase "It's just business, it's nothing personal", sharing how in fact it is always personal due to the fact that we exist in relation to other people, and every decision we make affects other people. She shares how social entrepreneurship differs from Economy of Communion practices, as the EoC way of business works to build people up without extracting from other people to solve a problem.

  1. What is a common way we might not think about where a business extracts from other people (causes them harm or doesn't value them properly) in order to "solve" another problem?
  2. How might an EoC business look at a solution to a problem like pollution versus a typical business?
  3. In what ways can we focus on not creating problems in the first place, rather than working to solve a problem by extracting from others?
