EoC Beyond Charity

Karen Joy Dizon is marketing director at Focolare Media, the U.S. publishing and communications arm of the Focolare Movement — home to New City Press and Living City magazine — where she leads marketing for books, periodicals, and digital content on dialogue, unity, and faith in daily life. She is also founder of Salamat Designs LLC, an EoC business.

In this video Karen Joy discusses how 'charity' can be part of a business from start to finish, not just what is done with profits at the end.

  1. Do you agree with Karen that frequently charity is an afterthought, or the last thing to do 'if there is enough to give'?
  2. She describes EOC as integrating the giving into the very model of what the business is about. Have you seen that exemplified in other businesses before?
  3. Making lots of money and then giving some away is traditional charity, or philanthropy. The EOC model thinks differently about this insofar as it wants to help the poor even through the business itself when possible. Early EOC companies created jobs specifically for the poor. Can you imagine ways your company you work at could directly help the poor in ways other than financial charitable giving?
